Code Enforcement - Lawn/Weeds

Regarding the upkeep of the lawn & weeds on the exterior of your property, there are two codes that must be followed within the Village of East Syracuse. One is the International Property Maintenance Code which was adopted by New York State. The other is our own local law within our Village Municipal Code.

Village of East Syracuse Municipal Code

§744.0 Weeds

No owner or occupant shall allow vegetation other than trees and shrubbery to grow higher than 8 inches in any yard that abuts a public thoroughfare or in a street margin abutting their property.

International Property Maintenance Code (2017 Uniform Code Supplement)

§302.4 Weeds

All immediate exterior property shall be maintained free from weeds or plant growth in excess of 10 inches (254 mm). All noxious weeds shall be prohibited. Weeds shall be defined as all grasses, annual plants and vegetation, other than trees or shrubs provided; however, this term shall not include cultivated flowers and gardens.

When a property is found in violation of these codes, a letter is sent to the property owner giving them (3) days to abate the problem. If the code violation still exists after the (3) days, a fully insured landscaper will be hired by the Village and sent to the property to bring the exterior of the property up to code. The cost will then be added to the tax bill for that property.
